Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if this vacation is right for the group I plan to travel with and me? Charter yacht vacations have a great deal to offer but they are not for everyone. By answering the following questions (for yourself and EVERYONE in your party), you should discover if an adventure on Yacht Slipstream is the best vacation for you.

  • 1. Do you REALLY enjoy boating? (sometimes for as much as a few hours per day)
  • 2. Do you REALLY love the outdoors?
  • 3. Are you ready to rediscover nature for the next 8 days on your vacation?
  • 4. Can you REALLY live without the laptop, the cell phone, the personal dvd player etc for 8 days?
  • 5. Do you eat a variety of foods and enjoy trying new ones?
  • 6. Are you willing to abide by the simple rules on charter yachts? (They all apply to safety, consideration of other guests, privacy and respect for the yacht - our home)
  • 6. Are you relaxed enough to take each day as it comes and be flexible in your adventure?
  • 7. Do you feel truly comfortable in bare feet and casual beach attire?
  • 8. Do you expect the crew to sail the boat, show you the best of the islands (based on your interests), provide creative and flavorful meals and plenty of cold beverages, and participate in your adventure?
  • 9. Will simple, casual, clean accommodations suit your needs?
  • 10. Do you enjoy the sun and the sand?

If you answered yes to all or most of the above questions, you will most likely have the time of your life on Yacht Slipstream!

What should I pack?
Yacht Slipstream and most of the establishments in the Caribbean are comfortable and casual. The Virgin Islands are generally hot and sunny with temperatures ranging between 85 and 90 degrees so light casual clothing and beach attire are in order. Divers should bring their own wet suit. Hikers may want to pack a comfortable pair of hiking sandals. Don't forget cameras, sun screen and any prescription medications. Remember to pack light! Space is limited on the boat.

Is smoking permitted on board?
The Captain and the chef do not smoke. Guests are permitted to smoke only in very specific outdoor areas on the yacht.

Is fishing available?
Deep sea and bone fishing are available in the BVI at an additional cost to your charter fee. We are happy to make arrangements for you on an appropriate vessel with a qualified crew.

Can you accommodate special diets?
Yes! With advance notice, we will design a menu that meets the needs of your group? Please be understand that we are unable to offer kosher or organic foods charters. The link below will direct you to our preference form. When completing the form it is best to consult everyone in your charter party.

What forms of communication with land are available while we are at sea?
Communication to and from the U.S.V.I. and British Virgin Islands can be unreliable. Some cell phone providers have good service some of the time. Cell service is nearly always available through C.T.I. Boat Phone at premium rates. The boat is equipped with VHF and SSB radios for emergency situations and Internet cafes are available on many of the islands along the way.

Do you provide transportation to and from the airport?
Yes! We will arrange to have a driver meet you at the airport and provide transportation to the designated pick up point and then return you to the airport at the end of your charter.

Can I bring my children?
Due to the nature of this type of vacation and safety concerns, children under the age of 10 are not permitted. Children over the age of 10 years may be permitted but, please consult with the crew prior to booking.

What documentation is required?
While St. Thomas is a U.S. Territory, passengers traveling on Slipstream from the United States will be required to bring a valid U.S. Passport and supporting identification such as a driver's license. The above documents must be presented to the Captain of the vessel, U.S. Customs and British Customs. Passport information is available through the U.S. State Department.

What if I have a medical/health condition?
Some of the areas on the itinerary are remote and proper medical care may not be available. Please discuss any health concerns with the crew prior to booking. Guests working toward dive certification will have to complete a medical questionnaire and certain ailments may disqualify them from participation.

Where can I complete my classroom and pool requirements for dive certification?
Please contact www.padi.com for a list of instructional facilities in your area.

Will I get sea sick?
If you have a history of sea sickness or just want to take precautions, there are several options available. Many of our guests report exceptionally good results when they wear sea sick bands - small sweat bands that act on pressure points in your wrists. They are inexpensive, reusable and available at most dive shops or online. Others prefer herbal remedies because they are highly effective and do not produce the side effects associated with traditional anti-sea sick medications. Rain Tree Nutrition has an extensive line of natural remedies available.

How do I make payment for my charter?
Charters booked more than 6 months out require a 25% down payment, an additional 25% at 6 months and the balance due at boarding. Charters booked less than 6 months out require 50% due at booking and 50% due at boarding. Certified bank checks, money orders, traveler's checks and cash are accepted. All payments are received and processed through Paypal or our professionally bonded clearinghouse – Charterport.

Do you have references?
Yes! The crew on Slipstream has provided high quality charters for over 12 years and many of our guests and professional associates are pleased to provide us with references. We are proud members of The Charter Yacht Society, Charterport B.V.I. and P.A.D.I.
